“..always looking out the moving glass, as scenes would fly by..”

They say a picture is worth a thousand words… in this case, a picture is worth a thousand miles. As a new father navigating the new waters of fatherhood and unemployment, my camera became both an outlet and a coping mechanism during long isolated days of lockdown.

When describing this project to others, it’s natural to cringe at time-stamping this body of work with a global pandemic, but it is what it is. These photographs were made during peak COVID lockdown in Los Angeles.

With that being said, I found solace in capturing the essence of a city that seemed both familiar and distant at the same time. From the quiet alleyways in the suburbs, to the palm trees towering over East LA boulevards, this collection of photographs can be viewed as a poetic love story dedicated to a place I fell in love with. As I drove without aim, I explored almost every inch of LA.

As you flip through these pages, imagine yourself placed in the passenger seat, watching out the window as the city zooms by. Allow the images to string together fragments of time into fantastical stories. As a child, I constantly looked out the window of my parents car, turning blurry and fast-moving images into beautiful landscapes.

To this day, I cherish my driving time (preferably alone). Driving leads me to so much discovery all while allowing me to channel an interesting form of meditation. To explore via driving helps me drown out responsibility life has aquired, so my inner child can create freely. Each image represents stolen moments and hours when I managed to escape into the city. Life’s greatest adventures are found not in faraway lands, but within the walls of our homes and the streets of our own cities.

Thank you for taking time to view LA as I saw it in 2020… Through Moving Glass.
